I just keep telling myself this over and over...it seems to work! My name is Sean and my wife, Emily Hutchinson (now Ferons), was friends with your wife at Ricks. I went through a very similar process last year and started a MS program in Computer Science at BYU in September. It was a big adjustment and I’ve had ample opportunity to double-guess and doubt myself, but I’ve finally acclimated and life is good. I’d like to suggest the following:

1) We should hang out. Our wives were friends and they both love Seattle which is great, but I think education and psychology and technology are awesome, so that’s even better. I just decided (like as in TODAY), what my research area is going to be and it is HEAVILY related to what you’re going into and it just makes since that we should make some interdepartmental collaboration take place.

2) You should strongly consider living in Wymount Terrace. Firstly because that’s where we live and it would facilitate my previous suggestion, especially if you were in our ward. Secondly I know the apartments are really small and the bathrooms are terrible and all that jazz, but I seriously can’t tell you how awesome it is for kids.

3) Invest in a moped. You don’t have to go broke; I bought one for $350. You can’t beat the parking spaces (better than most faculty spots) and it makes it easy to zip home for lunch sometimes.

Anyways, congrats again! Let me know what we can do to help.
Seanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04392912544254897583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6684094634487727684.post-70513291845070411842013-04-12T09:09:57.581-07:002013-04-12T09:09:57.581-07:00My dad would tell you, 'way to get it done whe...My dad would tell you, 'way to get it done when kids are little!' He went back to school when he had four kids between 11 and 3 yrs old. From my end, I found a doctoral program with kid(s) crazy hard, but not impossible. Especially with a rad spouse. Best advice I ever got: write every day. Once I got to the dissertation, instead of saving up for a whole day I could get away from kiddos and home, I'd just put in an hour or two when they were sleeping. Every day. Made it much more manageable. It's tough but doable. :)

My advice is to be really understanding of each other. Finals week for you is finals week for Steph (or, if you don't have finals...just know that she'll be really stressed out whenever you are). My husband is really helpful but I find myself realizing exactly how helpful he is when he's got a huge project due soon because then he gets just a little less helpful and I'm left to pick up the slack.

And that's totally fine. But it just means that I'm stressed out at the same time he is. :)

I'm sure that I'm only thinking of that bit of advice right now because it's the last week before finals right now so Andrew has ten trillion big projects due.

We made a 2013 Bucket List at the beginning of this year, listing the things we wanted to do as a family. That way we can SEE how much time we're spending together (aside from FHE, which is a must). Things like going for hikes (x-number per year) to taking an out-of-town vacation. It helps Andrew remember that there's more that he's supposed to do than read text books. And he's really list-oriented so it works for us. :)

Anyway, I'm excited for you guys! I'm sure you'll do great!Nancyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08631734965938273438noreply@blogger.com
